Peter Uka’s memories of growing up in 1970s and 80s Nigeria have culminated in a superb New York debut at The FLAG Art Foundation. The richness of colour and texture in each frame is simply extraordinary.
Based in Cologne since 2008, the artist renders flashbacks from his youth into realistic scenes. ‘The paintings I do are bones from memories,’ Uka has explained. ‘A snippet of different parts of what I remember from my childhood back home.’
An avid record collector, music informs Uka’s compositions along with recognisable late 20th-century trends, creating a reflection of Nigerian life at the time.
