Takesada Matsutani‘s enchanting forms seem to bring material to life.

Reflecting the irrepressible creative spirit of the Gutai group, notably their desire to physically engage with their chosen materials, Matsutani manipulated vinyl adhesive by blowing pockets of air into bulbous forms through his mouth or with a hairdryer.

The result is a series of organic and tactile abstractions, whilst remaining tightly bound to the colour black, except for the deliciously deep blue and violet tones that emerge underneath.

Matsutani’s exhibition Combine will be on view at Hauser & Wirth‘s New York 22nd space until the beginning of April.
