Almine Rech New York is pleased to present a group show by Jenny Brosinski and Cristina De Miguel. This is Brosinkski's second exhibition with the gallery, and it is De Miguel's first presentation with the gallery. The exhibition will be on view from March 9 to April 22, 2023.
Jenny Brosinski regularly uses raw canvases to create large mixed media paintings. Brosinski is best known for her compositions of canvases with typical lightness and simplicity–while she deconstructs her canvas into new creations, gathering classic oil colours with dirt, dust, household detergent or machine laundry. Her process orientated approach let us participate in her studio experience and she uses her fascination for materials, incompleteness and failure to create paintings which are often compared to minimalism, calligraphic aesthetics, Écriture automatique or children's mark-making.
Cristina De Miguel's approach to painting is emotional, thinking in formal terms but balancing it out with a let-go attitude. De Miguel insists on the materiality of the painting by fragmenting the figure, so the figure is not the central point of the painting but the act of painting in itself. The iconography in her work alludes to action, velocity, and the possibilities of the body -bodies that melt physically, in the same way paint drips and melts too.
