A lifelong fascination with ancient civilizations lies at the heart of Dumoulin’s practice. His readings of the Iliad and the Odyssey have become a wellspring of inspiration, not only through the power of their narratives, but also through the lyrical quality of their language. These Homeric texts have left a lasting imprint on his imagination, giving rise to dreamlike landscapes and forgotten ports. His paintings aim to capture that breeze, that echo from a distant past that still seems to drift through our present.

In this new body of work, Dumoulin presents a series of earthy-toned canvases where pared-down shapes hint at elusive horizons. Working with a palette reminiscent of ancient pottery, he constructs imagined geographies where seas, mountains, and vanished harbors converge. The titles, borrowed from ancient place names once found along the Mediterranean and African coasts, lend a musical resonance to each piece. They conjure distant lands and submerged memories, fragments swallowed by time.

Each painting is born from hundreds of small, schematic drawings, from which the artist retains only the most precise forms. Geometrized, the motifs are thus reduced to their essence. Frédéric Dumoulin does not seek to represent reality, but rather to convey a kind of inner song through a dense and crystalline composition. For him, his works are images of the “daydream of the awakened”: the one we have with open eyes, at dawn, when the still-blurry world reveals its poetry.
