Press Release

ARARIO GALLERY SEOUL held a solo exhibition by sculptor KIM Byoungho (b. 1974), titled Lost in Garden from 26 December 2024 to 8 February 2025. KIM creates sculptures and installations highlighting its aesthetic forms, using metal as his primary material. His meticulously planned production procedure, based on detailed design blueprints and executed within a highly segmented production system, reflects certain aspects of contemporary society.

As a modern individual embedded in the structure of society, KIM combines mechanical precision with mesmerising artistic expression for new forms of sculptures. For him, an artwork resembles a product shaped by social consensus, such as norms, rules, and systems. His artistic vision evokes philosophical questions about human life and psychology within a civilization built on rationalism.

This exhibition, spanning three floors of ARARIO GALLERY SEOUL, presents approximately ten sculptures, including both signature pieces and new works by the artist. The abstract forms and surfaces of his metal sculptures, finished with various textures, achieve a distinctive balance and harmony within the space. The series encourages reflection on the relationships between beings of various sizes within the interconnected networks of a world resembling a vast machine, as well as the beauty emerging from these relationships.

About the Artist

Byoungho Kim inserts circuitry into metallic sculptures, presenting unique oeuvre of sound sculptures that create electronic sound. His works are described by tubes that stretch out from a certain focal point, with a steady electronic sound. The forms in which long narrow tubes stretch out in one or in many directions from a bulky center point juxtaposes with the swift sense of movement and the metallic coldness of his works. The metallic works are processed precisely according to the regulations of the parts and blue print the artist has designed, following the production method of mass production system, and reflecting the social structure of conventions, customs and standards. Here, the artist inputs calm electronic sound, and the sound flows in a slow simple manner that doesn’t interfere with the sculptural element of the work freely traverses between material and non-material, and visual and aural, allowing the viewer to experience a force that overpowers the space.

About the Gallery

ARARIO GALLERY SEOUL opened its doors in Sogyeok-dong in 2006. Since then, it has established its foothold as a leading contemporary art gallery in Korea and across Asia, continuing to be at the forefront of the international art scene through its efficient representation system and bold exhibitions. In March 2014, ARARIO GALLERY SEOUL relocated near the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art. In April 2018, ARARIO GALLERY SEOUL RYSE HOTEL, a second exhibition space in Seoul, opened in the Hongdae area. Running concurrently with its primary location until November 2019, the project space aimed to mirror the experimental spirit of the neighbourhood through its innovative programming. In 2022, ARARIO GALLERY SEOUL ended its Sogyeok-dong era. However, the various experimentation and ventures carried out in the gallery’s previous spaces continue to shape its future at its current location in Wonseo-dong, which reopened in February 2023. Through the preemptive discovery of young artists, steady support of represented artists, and the realisation of meaningful and original exhibitions, ARARIO GALLERY SEOUL aims to continually grow and contribute to the growth of the contemporary art scene in Korea.
