Press Release

Elias Santos was born in Cairu, a municipality in the Baixo Sul region of Bahia, near Tinharé Island and the city of Valença in Brazil. In this territory, where nature’s exuberance intertwines with symbols and rituals of Afro-Brazilian culture, the artist forged an essential part of his visual and symbolic repertoire. Regional popular festivities, the adornments and decorative elements he created alongside his older brother for these celebrations, masks worn by revelers, fabrics, musical instruments, and the tropical landscape all formed a universe of references that continues to resonate throughout his artistic production.
