Cadogan is delighted to present “Der Himmel über Berlin”, a new exhibition by German artist Kim Bartelt.
In this new body of work, a sequence of geometric yet impossibly light forms hover in what appears to be a liminal space, at once tangible yet elusive. The artist explores a state of transition between spaces and suspended instances. This in-between state is expressed through a distinctive formal language in which sheets of paper are applied to the canvas in geometric blocks. Semi-transparent, delicate tissue paper becomes a metaphor for transience, evoking the vulnerability of the moment and the impermanence of lived experience.
Conceived in Kim’s studio, the tones and mood of the urban skyline, visible through the window in the distance, permeate throughout this new body of work. The viewer is invited to dwell in this space of transformation, subtly informed by the palette of the city, a threshold where materiality and feeling converge. Juxtaposed with the lightness of the paper, geometric architectural forms convey stability. These structures attempt to preserve what is fleeting, giving form to the ephemeral.

Drawing on the language of geometric abstraction, the work of Kim Bartelt mediates on the ephemerality of our world and the hidden connections of contemporary human experience. Her use of a consciously restrained visual vocabulary, consisting of squares and rectangles, harnesses complex emotional states into seemingly controlled, harmonious compositions. Creating canvases that may at first appear solitary and silent, through contemplative engagement, reveal a pulsing inner landscape that captures the often fragile connection between the seen and the unseen, the permanent and transient.
