ZHOU WENDOU

In the context of this psychological analogy, the artist along with a psychologist will host a participatory performance on March 24th. Visitors willing to take part will fill out a questionnaire designed by the artist. Through an analysis of the boxes ticked, the psychologist will give a diagnosis. The participants will receive their diagnosis signed by the artist as a record of the performance.

About the artist

Zhou Wendou was born in 1970 in Beijing. In 1998, he went to Spain to study painting. Over the course of the ten years he spent learning and developing his artistic career in Spain, his creation underwent a natural evolution from painting, to installation and photography to eventually focusing exclusively on installation. After returning to China in 2008, the perspective gained from Spain was recontextualised in response to the Chinese landscape. Characterised by humorous banter and distinctly clean execution, Zhou Wendou balances form and content perfectly. The discourse speaks of contemporary issues, that may be heightened in China, but are almost always global. His works raises awareness. The execution is not exaggerated nor visually violent, and the audience is always is invited to engage in a dialogue with the artworks.

About de Sarthe Gallery

First established in Paris in 1977, de Sarthe gallery moved its location to be closer to the most exciting art scenes of the time. This passionate path to seek the most important artworks of Impressionist and Modern masters as well as to represent living artists led the founders, Pascal and Sylvie de Sarthe, from San Francisco to Los Angeles to Phoenix and presently to Hong Kong and Beijing, where they pioneered the complete relocation of their international gallery in 2010. Discovering talent ahead of the market, they brought global attention to the works of the Chinese painters in Paris, Zao Wou-ki, Chu Teh Chun and T’ang Haywen, as well as to one of the first major Chinese conceptual artists, Chen Zhen. Working closely with institutions, in 2002 they notably organized the first Robert Indiana retrospective at the Shanghai Art Museum. While representing artists worldwide and without focusing on their origin, the gallery currently represents a new generation of Chinese contemporary artists. After collaborating with established international artists, Vincent, the son of the founders, opened de Sarthe Beijing in 2014.
