Evgeny Antufiev
b. 1986 in Kyzyl, Russia
Antufiev grew up in the Siberian republic of Tuva, a remote region which maintains active practices of alchemy, oral folklore and shamanism to this day. The artist carves wood, boils bones and embroiders traditional fabrics with recurring images that blur the legibility of geography and temporality, collapsing physical and symbolic orders. Part of a generation that grew up negotiating the real and imagined experiences tied to the dissolution of the Soviet Union, Antu fi ev builds a mythology of fraught ambiguity, signi fi ers of power and cultural anxiety.
Evgeny Antufiev lives and works in Moscow, Russia. He graduated with a BA from the Institute of Contemporary Art, Moscow in 2009, winning the Kandinsky Prize for the Young Artist Project of the Year during his studies.
