Press Release

****Alina Frieske utilises the unique qualities of collage and creates an interplay of transparencies and superimpositions. In her working method, the artist is solely drawing from snippets of everyday social media captions and appropriated selfies from a huge crowd of strangers. She assembles them digitally into imagined portraits and sceneries.

This show features panels of digitally assembled photos, depicting closely intertwined narrowed figures and body parts. A firm hold on the phone, an index finger pressing the shutter release or the outstretched hand carrying too many bags, have been reduced to their essential forms to be recontextualised.

Bodies either fight for dominance, blend into the crowd, copy each other’s placement, or hope to escape the claustrophobic edges of the pieces. Within this ambivalence, the obsessive act of self-exposure does not come without an equally disturbing desire of being erased and to remain anonymous.

This project offers a deep reflection on the self in a media saturated space. How much does the abundance of information influence our behaviors?

About the Gallery

Located near PLATEFORME 10, Lausanne’s emerging arts district, Fabienne Levy is a Swiss contemporary art gallery that shows works by an international selection of artists. The gallery was established in 2019 by owner Fabienne Levy, a Swiss collector who had previously worked at Christie’s before becoming a freelance art advisor. Fabienne Levy’s aim as a gallery is to present ‘inspiring works’–most of them made exclusively for the gallery space–that foster art as a catalyst for change.
