“I often question, how a Balinese expresses something?”

Line and color are fundamental elements in visual art, often serving as markers of an artist’s identity. Through their exploration and combination, artists create unique visual languages that distinguish their work. This raises questions about how far these seemingly simple elements can serve as the foundation of artistic identity, and how that identity can be constructed and expressed through them.

To explore these questions, Gajah Gallery presents a solo exhibition by Bali-born, Yogyakarta-based artist I Gusti Ngurah Udiantara, known as Tantin. His creative practice, centered on painting, is deeply rooted in the essential roles of line and color. In this exhibition, Tantin deliberately employs these elements not just as decorative tools but as vital instruments for building visual narratives and engaging the viewer. Each stroke and hue represents his thoughts, emotions, and inner experiences—forming a rich, meaningful visual language and a distinct artistic identity.

About the Artist

Gusti Ngurah Udiantara, affectionately known as Tantin, was born on May 31, 1976, in Banjar Kelodan, Tampaksiring, Gianyar, Bali. From a young age, Tantin grew up in a family deeply rooted in traditional art, particularly sculpture, which indirectly shaped his interest and affinity towards art. His art education journey began with studying painting at the High School of Fine Arts (SMSR) in Bali. After completing his education at SMSR in 1996, Tantin pursued his fine arts studies at the Indonesian Institute of the Arts (ISI) in Yogyakarta. It was here that Tantin began to hone his artistic abilities in greater depth and develop his unique artistic identity. Since his college years at ISI Yogyakarta, Tantin has shown remarkable activity in the world of fine arts. He has regularly participated in various exhibitions, both group exhibitions with other artists and solo exhibitions. His participation in these exhibitions has not been limited to domestic events, but also international ones, demonstrating his dedication and recognition of his work from an early age.
