Galatea and Nara Roesler are pleased to collaborate for the first time in the making of the exhibition Barracas e fachadas do nordeste [Stalls and Façades of the Northeast], which inaugurates Galatea’s 2026 exhibition program in Salvador. The opening takes place on January 30, Friday, from 6 pm to 9 pm.
Curated by Tomás Toledo, Galatea co-founder, and Alana Silveira, director of Galatea Salvador, the group exhibition proposes a dialogue between the programs of both galleries by exploring the affinities among artists Montez Magno (1934, Pernambuco), Mari Ra (1996, São Paulo), Zé di Cabeça (1974, Bahia), Fabio Miguez (1962, São Paulo), and Adenor Gondim (1950, Bahia). The exhibition offers an expanded perspective on the vernacular architectures that shape the Northeast of Brazil: urban façades, ornamental parapets, market and festival stalls, and ephemeral structures that shape the region’s social and cultural landscape.
Within the group, Fabio Miguez investigates the façades of Salvador as a mosaic of architectural variations, while Zé di Cabeça transforms records of the parapets of Salvador’s suburban railway district into paintings. Mari Ra recognizes affinities between the geometries she encountered in Recife and Olinda and those present in São Paulo’s Eastern Zone, revealing connections forged through Northeastern migration. Montez Magno and Adenor Gondim, in turn, converge in their focus on the vernacular forms of the Northeast, Magno through the geometric abstraction present in the series Barracas do Nordeste (1972–1993) [Stalls of the Northeast (1972–1993)] and Fachadas do Nordeste (1996–1997) [Façades of the Northeast (1996–1997)], and Gondim through his photographic documentation of the street stalls that characterize Salvador’s popular festivities.
This partnership aligns with Galatea’s two-year anniversary in Salvador and reinforces the gallery’s mission to establish its location in Bahia’s capital as a convergence point for exchanges and connections among artists, cultural agents, collectors, and the general public.
