Scopic landscapes, Isaac Julien's solo exhibition at Galeria Nara Roesler, presents photographs that create a peculiar relationship with installation works such as True North (2004), Fantôme Créole (2005) and Ten Thousand Waves (2010).
In the photographs, the rigor with which the artist creates takes may be observed from another angle: the eloquence of space, which is a core aspect in the language developed by Julien, is even more intense in this exhibition. His strong social-political tone, which is evident in his narrative constructions, is presented with more subtlety in this exhibition. The visual delight of each work gradually shows his critical spirit both through the contrast among several images that create an analytical journey on social and geographic relations and in the careful composition of each frame.
Isaac Julien is one of the most important and influential British visual artists in the fields of installation and film. His work combines several disciplines, including cinema, photography, dance, music, theatre, painting and sculpture, which are captured in his audio-visual installations, documentaries and photographic pieces. The plurality of his work is not only present in the process of making, but also in the way in which it is exhibited, which includes several screens, with Julien being a pioneer in multiple-screen film installations.
