An island: campsites, beaches, landscapes veiled in mist — spaces of leisure and retreat. At times, figures emerge, yet never dominate the space. Grit Schwerdtfeger approaches her subjects with restraint and quiet precision; places and people remain undisturbed, wholly at ease within their own presence. Photography here becomes an act of attentive observation rather than intervention.
“Grit Schwerdtfeger departs from the realm of the documentary while remaining part of the world she photographs, alongside the viewer. Poised between serenity, melancholy, and a dry, understated wit, her work hovers at the threshold of expectation and recollection. These images are entirely of the present. This is a time for looking.” — Kristina Tieke
Born in Anklam in 1971, Grit Schwerdtfeger lives and works in Leipzig. She studied photography at the Academy of Fine Arts Leipzig (Hochschule für Grafik und Buchkunst) with Astrid Klein and Joachim Brohm. Schwerdtfeger has received numerous grants and awards, including a DAAD scholarship for studies in Cuba and a year-long residency at the Faculty of Fine Arts in Madrid. Her work is held in corporate and private collections in England, France, Austria, Belgium, Germany, and Canada. She is a member of the photographers’ collective lux. From 2012 to 2022, she taught at the Ostkreuz School of Photography in Berlin.
‘The beauty [of Grit Schwerdtfeger’s photographs] is in their ostentatious familiarity which everyone looks at but no one sees. Grit Schwertdtfeger reminds us of pure simplicity, opening our eyes to the miracle of the ordinary.’ ZOOM magazine
