Gazelli Art House is delighted to present a curated group exhibition with artists first time shown in Baku, Azerbaijan - Franz Ackermann, El Anatsui, Michelangelo Pistoletto and Richard Wilson.
Domestic Alien is a show that touches on notions of home and domesticity underpinning differences in societal and cultural values, regional and historical influences on these values, as well as the impact of living in a highly globalised world, bringing with it the concept of displacement.
Franz Ackermann's imagined and whimsical landscapes disorients yet engulfs the viewer in a joyous world full of colour and abstractism. The depicted shapes and selected colours provide a common ground that disparate ideas of home seize to be relevant as the fantasy world unravels, inviting and all-inclsuive.
Installation sculptures of El Anatsui produced from found and discarded objects present the concept of recycling and waste management, relevant in the discussions of colonial and postcolonial economic and cultural exchange in Africa. Applied to the universalism of human values, common ground between nations and peoples, the work triggers a sense of continuity between generations in light of movement within and between countries.
Michelangelo Pistoletto's approach to the totality of art with everyday life, allows for the association to be made with our surrounding space through the artist's intervention with the surface of mirrors or polished steel. Absorbed into the setting he recreates on the surface, the viewer sees at once the familiar and distorted reality.
Richard Wilson's sculptures from domestic environments, continue with the play on the real and fantasy worlds, as redesigned found furniture illustrate traces of what once used to be familiar.
