A Place to Stand is a curated exhibition that considers the complexities of humans’ relationship to the landscape. While not a landscape exhibition in the traditional sense these works are linked by the impact ‘place’ has had on each artist.

Encompassing both Post War and Contemporary New Zealand paintings it includes works by Michael Smither, Judy Millar, Michael Illingworth, John Pule, Michael Smither, Dick Frizzell, Michael Hight and Colin McCahon.

The focal point of the exhibition is a seminal work by Colin McCahon titled St. Matthew: lightening, 1977. Questions of spirituality, faith and new life link the works of McCahon, Illingworth and Pule, and build to broaden a conception of place and identity.

While other artists use the landscape as their subject, Judy Millar works with the idea of ‘place’ not as location but as an event, a coming together of energies that involve the environment, subjectivity and time.
