GRAHAM FLETCHER

Graham Fletcher has been a practicing artist since 1997 and has exhibited extensively in both New Zealand and Abroad. He has works held in significant private and public collections and has also received numerous awards and grants including the Wallace Arts Trust Development Award (2010).Fletcher’s work explores the critical legacy of the widespread European tradition of housing collections of Oceanic and African Tribal art in domestic settings. Of particular relevance, to an artist of mixed Samoan and European heritage, is the question of how this legacy might be appropriated and subverted within a contemporary Pacific and New Zealand context. These ideas formed the basis for further research and in February 2010 he completed his Doctorate of Fine Arts at the University of Auckland. Recent shows he has participated in include Home AKL at Auckland Art Gallery (2012), the 7th Asia Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art at Queensland Art Gallery and the Gallery of Modern Art, Brisbane (2012), and Future Primitive at Heide Museum of Modern Art, Melbourne (2013). Fletcher is Senior Lecturer, Studio Coordinator of Painting at the Dunedin School of Art.
