HELMUT NEWTON
1920-2004, GermanyBorn in 1920 in Berlin, Germany, Helmut Newton is a photographer whose provocative, erotically charged black-and-white photographs have featured in several fashion publications and advertisements. Newton spent his childhood in Berlin and immigrated with his family to Australia in 1940. He spent five years in the Australian Army and became an Australian citizen in 1946.
In 1964, he was granted a contract for editorials for French Elle, which was later extended in 1966. In 1975 he had his first solo exhibition in the Nikon Gallery in Paris, and in 1976 published his first volume of photographs of women. For his 80th birthday in 2000, the New National Gallery in Berlin held a large retrospective which travelled to London, New York, Tokyo, Moscow, and Prague. In 2003, the Helmut Newton Foundation was established in Berlin. Newton died in Los Angeles in 2004.
