Press Release
Martin Browne Contemporary is delighted to present The Beautiful as Force, a new exhibition of paintings by Savanhdary Vongpoothorn.

The motifs in Savanhdary Vongpoothorn’s new body of work are derived from a figure of beauty in nature; the Australian scribbly gum. Vongpoothorn has long been enchanted by the cryptic scribblings found on these trees and speaks of the desire to somehow “decipher” them.

Vongpoothorn’s exhibition also celebrates the recent publication of In Country, an art/poetry book produced in collaboration with the Canberra poet Leon Trainor. While working on this series of paintings, Vongpoothorn and Trainor have drawn inspiration from each other’s exploration of Australian and Asian landscapes. The book contains poems by Trainor that celebrate places in Australia and Asia, matched with examples of Vongpoothorn’s paintings. Vongpoothorn and Trainor have also worked together to produce two new paintings and poems for this exhibition in which each has responded to the other’s work.
