OMR is pleased to announce Upward Panic, a group show curated by Rodrigo Ortiz Monasterio Lebrija, opening Thursday 22 September, 7pm–10pm, during the GAMA Art Week in Mexico City (22–25 September 2022).
Taking its title from the autobiography of Eva Palmer Sikelianos (1874–1952)—musician, choreographer essayist and patron of the arts—the exhibition considers the eccentric life of this extraordinary woman and her initiative to revive the Delphic Festivals, a series of events held in the 1920s at the archaeological site of Delphi, commemorating ancient Hellenic culture and arts in a modern rendition which sought to bring to light the spirit of antiquity.
Built through a dialogue between archival material, artworks from the OMR Collection and works by contemporary artists that evoke Palmer's ideologies, Upward Panic is a story about the evolution and transcendence of the theosophical movement, the development of the exhibition spaces of the time, and the sapphic feminism promoted by Palmer.
With artworks by contemporary artists: Haris Epaminonda (Cyprus, 1980), Rodrigo Hernández (Mexico, 1983), Jorge Méndez Blake (Mexico, 1974), Christodoulos Panayiotou (Cyprus, 1978), Francesco Pedraglio (Italy, 1981), and Tania Pérez Córdova (Mexico, 1979).
