Press Release

Perrotin Los Angeles opens its fall 2025 season with a solo presentation by Los Angeles-based artist Roberto Benavidez (b. 1973). Celebrated for his imaginative piñata sculptures that transform the humble craft of piñata-making into creations that “provide awe,” Benavidez will present Bosch Beasts—works from his ongoing series inspired by the paintings of the fifteenth-century Dutch painter Hieronymus Bosch.

Although Benavidez worked in bronze when he first trained as a sculptor, he taught himself over 15 years ago to make piñatas using traditional techniques, attracted by modesty and affordability of the materials, as well as the rich history of the piñata form, whose origins can be traced across cultures, from China, to Italy, to Mexico. In Benavidez’s hands, the piñata is elevated to a masterfully-crafted and labor-intensive artform with layers of historical references and meaning.
