PKM Gallery is pleased to present a solo show Beyond Words by Bek Hyunjin who has been actively working across diverse fields as a painter, installation artist, performance artist, musician and an actor. The exhibition begins on 4 June and will stay on view until 3 July.
Beyond Words is comprised of ‘painting/ sculpture/ installation/ music/ video/ stage play/ script/ performance/ acting,’ and has in total of 60 works on display. Apart from three of his previous paintings, the artworks are newly created specifically for this exhibition. Showcased artworks include 44 paintings, 9 installation works, 4 pieces of music, a video, script, and a sculpture.
Pieces of music specially produced for this exhibition will be played on a speaker and will be accessible through QR codes in each exhibition space, providing a multi-sensory experience. A performance and live music event will take place on 19 June and 3 July respectively to accompany the exhibition. In mid-June, there will be a limited-edition package with a booklet, poster, and audio cassette tape produced in line with the exhibition.
Bek Hyunjin chose not to use any texts that describe his works in the exhibition. Instead, he remarked: ‘I hope each audience can enjoy the exhibition as one sees and hears.’
Bek Hyunjin has held solo exhibitions in countries including Korea, England, Germany, and Italy. He has held exhibitions at major art institutions such as the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art (Seoul, Korea), Plateau Samsung Museum of Art (Seoul, Korea), Art Sonje Center (Seoul, Korea), Sungkok Art Museum (Seoul, Korea), Shanghai Minsheng Art Museum (Shanghai, China), and Kunsthalle Wien (Vienna, Austria). In 2017, he was chosen as the nominee/sponsored artist for the ‘Korea Artist Prize 2017’ of the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Korea. As a singer-songwriter, Bek also works actively as a member of the Uhuhboo Project, the first-generation indie band, and a project band Bahngbek. A maverick actor who steadily practices his omnidirectional artistic activities, Bek appeared in movies The Day He Arrives, Gyeongju, Keys to the Heart, Samjin Company English Class, and Baby, Box, Broker by Hirokazu Koreeda, and television series Taxi Driver, and Happiness.

Born in 1972, the South Korean artist experiments with various genres of the arts including fine art, music, film and literature, has garnered attention for bringing forth paintings and drawings that reveal his artistic sensitivity and ability to use multi layers of visual languages. To Bek, painting is one of the ways he actualizes his steadfast aesthetic views and interests. Avoiding any use of specific narratives or schematic compositions, he composes the canvases withspontaneous riddling figures, brushstrokes and brilliant colors. His intuition-driven drawings of the fleeting moment portray the mysterious tension between artistic performance and the ultimate futility of its meaning.

PKM Gallery was established in 2001 in Seoul by Park Kyung-mee—an art historian and the commissioner of the Korean Pavilion at the 49th Venice Biennale—with a mission to promote Korean art abroad and to foster conversation between Korean and international contemporary art. With previous locations in Hwa-dong and Cheongdam-dong, the gallery moved to its current space in Samcheong-dong—an artistic and cultural hub in the heart of Seoul—in 2015.
