Press Release
P K M Gallery is pleased to present a solo exhibition by Sihn Min Joo from January 14th to February 10th, 2015 as the last project exhibition at the Temporary Exhibition Space. The exhibition will display recent works from Sihn’s painting series uncertain emptiness.

Through various series of works, Sihn has persistently created paintings based on the fundamental artistic gesture of brush stroke. Sihn has shaped her own powerful painterly surface through repetitive brisk brush strokes, and using the printmaking tool squeegee to erase or stain the traces of the brush. Not only is the chance smudging of the paint – produced through the physical contact between the brush and canvas – taken as something beyond her control but also an essential part of the work process. This process leads the work to deviate from standardized boundaries to be reinvented into a beautiful surface filled with a sense of freedom and wondrous traces. Sihn’s uniquely beautiful works focus on two antipodal colors of black and white, between which diverse layers of grey form endless conflict and harmony between black and white.

Sihn’s work plays with powerful brush strokes and explores the essence of painting, demonstrating the outstanding gift of an artist charged with creative energy and sincere attitude.

Sihn completed her BFA and MFA in Painting at Hongik University. She has participated in numerous solo and group exhibitions in Korea, and has also participated in Korean Artist Festival at Knapp Gallery in London, UK.

About the Gallery

PKM Gallery was established in 2001 in Seoul by Park Kyung-mee—an art historian and the commissioner of the Korean Pavilion at the 49th Venice Biennale—with a mission to promote Korean art abroad and to foster conversation between Korean and international contemporary art. With previous locations in Hwa-dong and Cheongdam-dong, the gallery moved to its current space in Samcheong-dong—an artistic and cultural hub in the heart of Seoul—in 2015.
