HAN QIAN

Han Qian’s practice often departs from subtle and incidental clues. Across video, sound, and objects, these scattered remnants continuously draw closer to one another, pointing toward experiences that resist complete recovery yet persist in their presence. Whether through historical geographic coordinates that have been replaced or misidentified, images and sounds from different times and spaces superimposed within a single frame, or her material explorations of pliable substances, the artist employs bodily traces and fragile materials to render those effaced experiences present once again. These objects and traces serve at once as vessels of private memory and as folds and imprints left by history upon the flesh. By re-organizing historical archives, oral testimonies, and material fragments, Han Qian undertakes a whispering reconstruction across superimposed temporal layers and spatial fields, seeking to bring forth those individual experiences that have been squeezed out and forgotten by linear historical narratives.

Soft grass continues to grow, layer by layer covering what was once there. The road has not disappeared—it simply no longer remains as clearly as before. At times it appears, at times it fades, obscured by new landscapes, rewritten by time, and ceaselessly reshaped by all that has since occurred. The traces beneath are unstable, never fully recoverable.

Perhaps wandering is itself a way of recognizing.

It means passing through repeatedly—lingering, turning back, and reaffirming. It does not seek to arrive at any fixed destination, but rather, among ever-shifting coordinates, to locate temporary bearings and connections that have not yet entirely dissolved.

Certain specific, minute, even incidental clues—a salvaged oral account, a misnamed place, a gaze cast toward the star-filled sky, a wedding route retraced, a posture held by a body—invariably lead, unexpectedly, to deeper reaches of time and space otherwise inaccessible. They resist precise naming: they are it, yet never merely it.

Following the paths overgrown with soft grass, the scattered remnants draw ever closer. Perhaps we cannot return to where they first began—yet still, in the act of repeated recognition, we may catch those faint echoes.
