Agatha Gothe-Snape is a contemporary Australian artist whose practice is based on improvisational performance. Found or poetic texts, objects, dance performances, and collaborations characterise her wide-ranging, conceptual oeuvre. Gothe-Snape employs this variety of mediums to challenge the ways in which we relate to one another and to art itself.
In several of her works, Gothe-Snape has collaborated with other performers to explore and suggest connections between time, space, movement, and the body. Notable works include Here, an Echo (2015-16), a commission for the 20th Biennale of Sydney, in which Gothe-Snape collaborated with dancer Brooke Stamp on a score, performance, and descriptive document that has been described as a choreography for the city. The artist’s ongoing series POWERPOINTS is a catalogue provided to paying subscribers that is updated regularly with new works at no extra cost. Works such as Here, an Echo and POWERPOINTS occupy spaces that are both physical and non-physical, emphasising Gothe-Snape’s powerful transparency of process and willingness to go beyond fixed limitations.
Recent solo exhibitions of Gothe-Snape’s work have included Volatile Medium at The Commercial Gallery, Sydney (2016); Free Speaking at Studio 12, Gertrude Contemporary, Melbourne (2014); You and everything that is not you at The Physics Room, Christchurch (2013); and Four Parts at KALIMANRAWLINS, Melbourne (2011). Gothe-Snape’s work can be found in several public collections including at the Art Gallery of New South Wales, Sydney; University of Queensland Art Museum, Brisbane; Monash University Museum of Art, Melbourne; National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne; and Museum of Contemporary Art, Sydney.
