Bridget Smith Biography

Bridget Smith’s photographs document the spaces we create for entertainment and the environments for the consumption of pleasure. She is interested in those spaces where pretence and reality are confused as seen in her large format photos of Las Vegas and the interiors of the themed hotels in California.Another focus is on those places where one can easily lose oneself such as deserts or the constellations in the vast tracts of outer space., Her film Monitoring Space, Shot at the Mills Observatory in Dundee captures an individual’s fascination with outer space. This work led to an invitation to become the first artist in resident at Two Rooms to continue her exploration of real and constructed spaces.During her residency Bridget traveled to the Mt John Observatory at Lake Tekapo, and photographed the Southern Cross and Orion. In addition to exploring the New Zealand landscape she was able to gain entry to the personal spaces of private rooms and clubs in Northland and the East Cape, photographing the collections and obsessions revealing a somewhat privileged view of this construction, like a tourist observing their surroundings without ever being a part of them.
