Charles Munka is a French artist based in Hong Kong. With a distinctive visual style interpreted across the media of painting, drawing and collage, Munka’s works project a popular culture aesthetic concerned with the appropriation of imagery, drawing from influences which extend from Abstract Expressionism to Japanese manga. Munka’s works are inspired by the theory of dérive: an unplanned journey through an urban landscape from which the aesthetics of surrounding architecture and geography subconsciously direct to an experience. In this case the final experience is the artwork: a manifestation of information collected on the artist’s travels. The vibrant, colour-saturated fragments of Munka’s paintings allude to the wonderment and chaos of the postmodern Asian city, the juxtaposition of cartoon figures, Asian characters, signage and Grecian symbols amalgamating in an epic narrative of which Munka is the protagonist.
Munka has participated in solo and group exhibitions in Hong Kong and Los Angeles, as well as collaborations in Tokyo, Paris, San Francisco and Shanghai, where he has taken on projects with Chanel, Cartier, Adidas, Ferrari, Converse, Birds of Tokyo and many others.
