Emmanuel Kwaku Yaro (Ghanaian, b. 1995) is a contemporary artist based in Labadi, Accra. For over six years, he has developed a focused and evolving practice, participating in numerous group exhibitions and collaborating with notable institutions such as Alliance Française d’Accra. He has presented a solo exhibition at the African Regent Hotel in Accra, which marked a significant expansion of interest in his work both locally and internationally. Yaro has also exhibited with Efie Gallery in Dubai and Phillips Auction House in London, and he is a member of the Artemartis collective in Accra. Inspired by artists such as Georges Seurat, Marie-Guillemine Benoist and Sami Bentil, Yaro’s research and development extend beyond the limitations of the f ive senses. A meticulous attention to detail underpins his practice. Working primarily in a pointillist technique, he constructs his compositions through carefully placed colour spots that gradually form his subjects. Each dot carries symbolic weight, representing the people of Labadi: the market woman, the elderly man assisted across the street, and the community figures who shaped his upbringing. Through this method, the individuals who defined his early life are embedded within every surface, travelling with the work wherever it is shown. Central to Yaro’s practice is the celebration of African identity and the dignity of the human body. His subjects resist conventional or imposed “model standards,” instead reflecting the diversity of forms found within his community. Labadi, as he portrays it, is a space free from judgment based on body size or type. His paintings affirm that beauty exists beyond restrictive ideals, and he consciously honours a range of African body types as an expression of inclusivity and self-acceptance. Yaro’s compositions emerge from both constructed and discovered narratives, exploring the relationship between past and present while inviting reflection on the future. His work prompts viewers to consider the nature of change and their willingness to participate in shaping it. What begins as an emotional response to his surroundings evolves into a broader statement of comfort, resilience and possibility. Fascinated since adolescence by the unrelenting spirit of his community, Yaro reflects on the determination of African individuals to create opportunity despite cycles of disappointment and limited resources. This drive to transform circumstance into possibility propels his artistic practice. Through texture, layered colour and intricate detail, he seeks not only to represent his people but also to inspire both young and old to recognise their own strength and potential. Each work becomes an affirmation of resilience and a meditation on an unfolding African future.
