A graffiti artist with a fine art degree, Flox first made her mark in inner-city Auckland, her trademark native birds, ferns and flowers magically transforming grey walls into vibrant depictions of the natural world.
Flox swiftly spread her wings, expanding into prints, murals, graphic design, live painting, projects, exhibitions and a notable stint with the musical collective Fly My Pretties, blurring our perceptions of what’s achievable with a single set of hands. Two guest appearances in consecutive years on The Block spurred private commissions for her distinctive straight-on-the-wall murals.
Flox’s stencils have over time, become more intricate and large scaled, prompting a demand for these as artworks in their own right. Meticulous and hands-on is the philosophy behind all the art making, paying homage to the craft of the cut, and what she calls her “labour of love.”
Today, Haus of Flox, her Auckland based showroom is a well-oiled machine, buzzing with energy and HQ for project-based studio work and exhibitions. “It feels like I’ve reached a point where I have this amazing team backing me, everyone playing an integral role in the development and day to day running of the business”.
2014 saw a return to a public art and exhibition focus for Flox, participating in two national street art events in Taupo and Christchurch and collaborating closely with her contemporary Michel Tuffery MNZM. This seamless relationship between the two artists has since taken off, collaborating on various art projects, exhibitions and a two-day national workshop tour.
It has been, says Flox, “a very rewarding relationship, where we have just seemed to meld seamlessly, artistically, thematically and socially. A rare find.”
The co-lab workshops have inspired other emerging artists around the country, a module that they plan to take to Asia and the Pacific Islands… watch this space.
Somewhere amid all of this frenetic activity Flox gave birth to her second child.
In 2015, Flox departs for Taiwan, where she is the recipient of the Taipei Artist Village residency. There, she will produce a new body of work, using her stencil-cutting and spray-painting skills to create art inspired by living, working and breathing a new culture, country and way of life.
