He Yunchang, born 1967 in Lianghe, Yunnan, is a renowned performance artist. Having completed studies in painting at the Central Yunnan Art Institute in China in 1991, the artist later focused his practice on extreme performance art and established himself with performances that have tested his strength and endurance.
He Yunchang has subjected himself to such agonies as full body incisions, casting himself within concrete, and, most dramatically, having a rib surgically removed. Through these methods of self torment, He Yunchang aims to combine existential thought with traditional Chinese mythology and philosophies.
He Yunchang lives and works in Beijing.
