Ian McKeever Biography

Ian McKeever was born in Yorkshire, England, in 1946. He began painting in 1969, following a degree in English Literature. His work is characterised by a combination of abstract painting and analogue photography. His first solo exhibition was at the ICA, London in 1973.

In 1989 he was awarded the prestigious DAAD scholarship in Berlin, which was followed in 1990 by a major retrospective exhibition at the Whitechapel Gallery, London. McKeever was elected a Royal Academician in 2003. Since then his work has been exhibited on an international level, most recently in solo exhibitions at Matt's Gallery, London (2017); Galleri Andersson/Sandstrom, Stockholm (2016); Galleri Susanne Ottesen, Copenhagen (2015); National Gallery of the Faroe Islands, Tórshavn (2015); Sonderjylland Kunstmuseum, Tonder (2014); Horsens Kunstmuseum (2012); Kunst Station Sankt Peter, Cologne (2012); Josef Albers Museum, Quadrat, Bottrop (2012); and Royal Academy of Arts, London (2008).

As well as a painter, McKeever is a gifted printmaker and works in etching, drypoint, woodcut and lithography. In 2008 a selection of his prints was exhibited at Tate St Ives as part of a tribute to the etcher Hugh Stoneman with whom he collaborated over many years.

McKeever has held various teaching positions, including Guest Professor at the Art Academy in Frankfurt and Professor of Drawing at the Royal Academy School of Arts, London. He is currently Visiting Professor in Painting at the Faculty of Art and Architecture at the University of Brighton. He has published many texts and essays primarily concerning the nature of painting.

His work can be found in many of the world's leading institutions, including Tate, London; British Museum, London; Arts Council of Great Britain; Government Art Collection; British Council; Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art, Edinburgh; Mumok, Vienna; Neues Museum, Nuremberg; Louisiana Museum of Modern Art, Humlebæck; Metropolitan Museum, New York; Brooklyn Museum of Art, New York; Yale Center for British Art, Connecticut; Boston Museum of Fine Art; MIT List Visual Arts Center, Massachusetts and Cincinnati Museum of Modern Art.
