Idil Ilkin Biography

Idil Ilkin’s large scale photo collages are mainly influenced by minimal music, calligraphy, marbling, rugs and tiles. She creates repetitive patterns as in traditional Islamic Arts or in minimalist music. Idil Ilkin’s compositions are characterized by the consumption habits, the life style imposed by mass media and economic cycles that dictate us to be a part of it. According to her, we get used to playing our consumerist roles as they continuously play with our perceptions and shape our ideas. In order to stay alive while carrying the existential anxiety in our hearts, we distort our personalities and devote ourselves to catching up with the imposed stimuli. The more we distort and change ever-repeatedly without listening to our inner voice, we transform into standard ”impulse-deaf” models for each other. As we are asked to accept that “Seeing is believing” and countless other clichés and slogans, we neglect to close our eyes and ignore our individual insights.

The on-going act of looking, observing, believing, obeying and imitating urges her to think of rhythm, repetition, echo and reflection. In her work she multiplies various images such as tunnels, highways, public housing projects, streetlights, hospitals, luxury goods, famous faces, toys, arms, transportation vehicles, organic industrial designs etc. As she repeats a word, an idea or a vision with collages, the word, sound and vision intersect and overlap and echo in depth, in silence.
