James Peele was born in Australia, and emigrated to New Zealand in 1865, where he worked as a professional artist from 1889. Largely self-taught, Steele returned to live in Melbourne from 1889, returning to paint intermittently in New Zealand, exhibiting works that revealed the subtle relationship between land and sky.
