Jaye Early is a Melbourne-based painter, video and performance artist who utilises these mediums to investigate complex and sometimes uncomfortable personal experiences. Jaye’s art practice is largely autobiographical, depicting public and private interactions, and intimate psychological spaces surrounding anxiety, loneliness, and the desire to achieve an authentic connection with another person.
Another theme examined through Jaye Early’s artwork is the divide between shared reality and the individual experience, and the subsequent predicament of defining or illustrating collective ‘truth’. Jaye’s paintings, videos and performances engage with conventions around what is acceptable and what is taboo within a shared space.
Jaye Early has participated in exhibitions around Australia and internationally. In 2013 he was a Semi-finalist in the Doug Moran National Portrait Prize and the Black Swan Prize for Portraiture. In 2014 Jaye was a Finalist in the prestigious Victorian Indigenous Art Awards. He is currently undertaking a PhD at the Victorian College of the Arts, Melbourne.
