Born in 1985 in Tarrytown, NY and currently based in Brooklyn, Justine Hill received a BA from the College of the Holy Cross, followed by an MFA from the University of Pennsylvania. Hill creates abstract paintings by layering elemental marks and forms that are distinguished by color, value, and opacity. Since 2015, the artist has worked with combinations of irregularly shaped canvases she calls “Cutouts” in pursuit of compositions that extend beyond traditional rectangular constraints. Hill repeatedly experiments with preparatory studies until she arrives at a satisfactory framework and executes her works using a variety of media and techniques, including acrylic paint, colored pencils, pastels, oil sticks, hand-printing, and collage. Her eclectic oeuvre is also indicative of the wide spectrum of influences that inform her practice, ranging from architecture and design to ancient mythology and science fiction.
Hill’s recent solo exhibitions include Omphalos, DIMIN (New York, 2023); Alternates, MAKI Gallery (Tokyo, 2022); Touch, Denny Dimin Gallery (New York, 2020); Pull, MAKI Gallery (Tokyo, 2020); and Bookends, David B. Smith Gallery (Denver, 2019). She also actively participates in group shows across the United States. The artist’s work is part of such significant collections as the Davis Museum (Wellesley, MA), the Parrish Art Museum (Water Mill, NY), and the Columbus Metropolitan Library (Columbus, OH).
