Earth, as seen from above, is a set of abstractions. Color spots, graphic ornaments and architectural structures. The Earth seen through the eyes of Kacper Kowalski reminds a repertory of non-figurative art history.
But this is photography. A dossier of human presence in the world and his attempts to dominate nature. Also how nature itself opposes these particular attempts. Every action taken, by either party, leaves traces, which are recorded in subsequent layers on the surface of the Earth. And no matter who happens to win - man or nature - the effect is surprisingly beautiful and harmonious.
Kacper Kowalski was born in 1977. With a degree in architecture, he designed buildings for four years. Then quit this job, turning instead to flying and photography. He pilots gyroplanes and paragliders.
Kowalski is one of the best known polish photographers. He exhibited in Abu Dhabi, Arles, Belfast, Düsseldorf, Helsinki, Copenhagen, Cracow, London, New York, Paris, Prag, Sandomierz,
Warsaw and his home Gdynia. His pictures have appeared in many major Polish and international magazines, including National Geographic, the Guardian, Time, LFI, Newsweek, and GEO. He has received awards and honourable mentions in numerous contests, including the World Press Photo Award, Picture of The Year, Grand Press Photo, Nikon 75th Anniversary Award, National Geographic, International Photography Award, Leica Oskar Barnack Award, Best of Photojournalism (NPPA).
