Kenix Xiaoqing Liang Biography

Kenix was born and raised in China, and now based in New York. She moved to the U.S for study in 2015. The paintings of Kenix Xiaoqing Liang center on re-imagination of earthly or ‘lesser’ forms of nature including insects, animals, plants, as well as contemporary objects created by natural or artificial forces. Through paintings, Liang tries to re-investigate the existed power dynamics in nature and discover hidden narrative contained within them, as an attempt to search for alternative ways of living or surviving in the current world. Her medium is mainly painting and ceramics, exploring the interaction between humans and nature, describing the connection between humans, flora and fauna, and society through non-verbal means, and recreating the metaphor of flora and fauna in daily life.

One hand vulgar, mortal, and unclean, the sub-astral world also evokes mythology, creation, and Eros. Driven by fascination with different forms of life and survival in the primordial and terrestrial spaces, the paintings meticulously look at nature, and the contradictions (the flourish and the decay, the animate and the inanimate, the predator and the prey) contained within it, and present a world infused with confusion as well as optimism.

Negotiating contrast and uniformity, fable and truth, in opposition as such, Liang finds herself inevitably constructing reality in the paintings, yet only more powerful for the personal and the emotion of the nature only shows its perpetuating self through the receding of what is immediately seen-possibility of an alternative reality, a possible healing power.
