LIZ ROWE

Liz Rowe graduated with a degree in Fine Arts from Otago Polytechnic, Dunedin in 2007 and has continued living in Dunedin since then. Place is the central idea behind her work as both a painter and ceramicist. In her painting practice she uses landscape as a symbol of place, focusing on the familiar, unremarkable and often overlooked aspects of place. By emphasising ordinary or everyday places, she wants to draw attention to what we do with all our land, not just the small pockets of spectacular scenery amongst the paddocks and the tracts of housing. A series of cow paintings were started in response to the explosive rise of dairy farming in New Zealand and questioning whether New Zealand wanted to turn the entire country into a dairy farm. Her ceramics investigate place as an actual, created space and place as a boundary between and around spaces. A current obsession is exploring the possibility of glazes especially very dry crackle and lava glazes.

Liz has shown work in group and solo exhibitions around New Zealand and her work has been selected for a number of award shows, including this year's Portage Ceramic Award.
