Marie Harnett’s work is inspired by films. She makes small, intricately detailed pencil drawings which capture fleeting moments of drama, suspense or beauty. When released from the original context of the film that inspired them, the drawings each tell a story of their own. More recently Harnett has also been making linocuts. Continuing to depict scenes from films, the linocut prints are large scale images built up from black and white curving lines, and can take up to one month to carve.
Harnett graduated from Edinburgh College of Art in 2006. In 2007 Harnett was selected for the Contemporary Art Society’s ARTfutures at Bloomberg Space and exhibited at The Aspect Prize at the Paisley Museum, Scotland. Recent solo and group exhibitions by Harnett include Decade of Gifts and Acquisitions, Yale Center for British Art, Connecticut, USA (2017); Marie Harnett, Theodore: Art, New York, USA (2017); Summer Exhibition, Royal Academy of Arts, London (2016); Last Year in Marienbad: A Film as Art, Bremen Kunsthalle, Bremen, Germany (2015) and Galerie Rudolfinum, Prague, Czech Republic (2016) and Drawings at Galleria Bonomo, Rome, Italy (2014).
Harnett’s works are held in international public and private collections including the Yale Centre for British Art, Connecticut, USA; the Museum of Modern Art, New York, USA; National Galleries Scotland, Edinburgh, UK and the British Museum, London, UK.
In November 2017 Harnett had her second solo exhibition at the Alan Cristea Gallery.
