Mark Neville was born in London in 1966 and studied fine art at Reading University before going on to complete Masters’ at Goldsmiths, University of London, and Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten, Amsterdam. Neville works at the intersection of art and documentary, investigating the social function of film and photography. He makes lens-based works which have been realised and disseminated in a large array of contexts, as both still and moving image pieces, slideshows, films, and giveaway books. His work has consistently looked to subvert the traditional role of social documentary practice, seeking to find new ways to empower the position of its subject over that of the author.
His works have been exhibited in numerous public collections and institutes around the world including The Multimedia Art Museum of Moscow, Russia; Foundling Museum, London; Royal Academy of Arts, London; OCT LOFT, Shenzhen; Shanghai Minsheng Art Museum, Shanghai; The Photographers’ Gallery, London; Contemporary Art Society, London; Tate Britain, London; Modern Art Oxford, Oxford; Kunstmuseum, Bern, Switzerland; Kunsthaus Essen, Germany and The Andy Warhol Museum, Pittsburgh, USA.
In 2014 Neville exhibited a body of work at The Imperial War Museum, London, made in response to the war in Afghanistan during his time as an official war artist. Neville’s solo exhibition, London/Pittsburgh, which was displayed at the Alan Cristea Gallery in 2014 traveled to The Silver Eye Centre, Pittsburgh, USA in 2015. Recent projects include Child’s Play at the Foundling Museum, London and Displaced Ukranians, commissioned by ZOiS Berlin.
Fancy Pictures, the first commercially available monograph book on Neville’s work was published by Steidl in August 2016. The monograph has been nominated for the 2017 Aperture Foundation PhotoBook Award.
