It's not just to reflect a current feeling or a sudden urge like, see this, a painting by someone trying to tell you something; a little rough maybe 'cause that's his personality. That might be pretty authentic but it wouldn't be enough for me right now. I'd consider it to fleeting. Maybe that's old fashioned but I think a painting needs complexity and quality to keep it attractive for a longer period of time."

Martin Assig lives and works in Berlin, where he studied at the Hochschule der Künste. He finds inspiration in many sources - religious traditions, folklore, rituals, the music of Bach, the art of Edvard Munch and Paul Klee. Diverse materials - pigments, beeswax and charcoal - create intimate and personal worlds, where sensuality and spirituality come together. Paintings and drawings by Martin Assig were recently shown at the Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen in Rotterdam and were subsequently acquired by the museum. His work has been shown in important national and international institutions such as Museo National Centro de Arte Reina Sofia, Madrid, Neues Museum Weserburg, Bremen, Hamburger Kunsthalle, Museum van Hedendaagse Kunst, Gent, Kunsthalle zu Kiel, Kunsthalle Bremen, Staatliche Kunstsammlungen, Dresden and a series of institutional and private collections from Oslo to New York.
