MIKE CHAVEZ

Mike Chavez Biography

Mike Chavez has taken residence in various cities in Australia and the Philippines and currently resides in Byron Bay, NSW. His works have been included in solo, group and art prize exhibitions in Australia and in affordable art fairs in Melbourne, London, New York and Brussels. He was nominated as one of the ‘top 20 artists under 35 in Australia’ by an independent panel of curators and arts writers assembled by Art Melbourne 06. In 2009, Chavez was an Archibald Prize finalist for his portrait of Aboriginal artist-provocateur Richard Bell.

Chavez looks at the influence of western systems of power and consumerism on Filipino culture. His most recent series trains his lens on Francis Ford Coppola’s classic movie, Apocalypse Now, which was filmed in the Philippines in 1979. Featuring stills from the film overlaid with aspirational emblems of American life, Chavez reminds us of the heavy influence of western culture on this small but densely populated archipelago.
