Unlike the cross-hatched surfaces associated with many bark paintings from north-east Arnhem Land, Groote Eylandt works employ rhythmic bands of dots and broken lines responsive to the morphology of represented forms. Since the 1960s, compositions increasingly extended beyond central motifs to fill the bark surface, reflected in the expansive field of Untitled.4 Nandabitta’s paintings explored ancestral narratives connected to Groote Eylandt and histories of exchange with Macassan traders. His works are held in major Australian collections including the National Gallery of Australia, Canberra; the National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne; and the Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory, Darwin.
