“Continuing his exploration of subterranean Sydney, recent National Art School graduate Oliver Hopes finds poetry and psychological depth in these C-type photographs that also reveal a Caravaggesque knack for balancing darkness with light”
- Michael Fitzgerald, Sydney Morning Herald
Since completing his BFA in photography at the National Art School, Sydney in 2010, Oliver has been exploring the theme of Drains.
The unusual architecture and the ways it can accidentally create powerful moods and motifs in a photograph are explored, with particular emphasis on the role of light and dark. I feel that this classic relationship creates an endless potential for re-interpretation by the viewer, and gives rise to an array of emotions and ideas. I am also interested in the way that something so typically “un-beautiful” can be transformed by these factors into something aesthetically pleasing and even romantic
Oliver was in the official selection of the 2011 RBS Emerging Artist Award.
