PETER DE LORENZO

b. 1952, Australia
Peter De Lorenzo Biography

Peter De Lorenzo's work lies between a kind of colour abstraction and expressionism. Colour is of primary importance and there are no images. The paintings are not “abstracted from” but rather they are inventions arrived at by an intuitive process.

“I never know when I begin how it will turn out. I usually work in series, and when describing my work to people who see it for the first time I find the most relevant analogy is that of musical form and structure.”

During a residency at the Cite in Paris in the mid '70's he began to explore Abstraction and subsequently had his first show at Watters gallery. In the '80's his work was purchased by the National Gallery of Australia and was selected for the first Moet and Chandon national touring exhibition; A number of grants from the Australian Film Commission enabled him to explore first film and subsequently digital moving images, and he showed my work at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Sydney and then toured nationally, and at the Hamburg Film Festival for three consecutive years in the '90' s. In 2003 at the New England Regional Art Gallery and again in 2008 at the Wollongong City Gallery he showed new abstract paintings.
