Rata Lovell-Smith’s paintings in the 1920s and 1930s of the landscape and vernacular architecture of the Canterbury province in New Zealand's South Island anticipated the Regionalist movement of the 1930s and modernism of artists such as Rita Angus.
Lovell-Smith attended (1911-1912), and taught (1924-1945) at Canterbury College, Christchurch, New Zealand. Her work is held in the collection of the Christchurch Art Gallery, New Zealand.
