Ryan Ponsford is a Melbourne based artist working primarily in photography. His work explores notions of the memento mori, the relationship between society and ecology and ideas concerning photography in contemporary art. “I like to think of myself as more of a painter than a photographer in that my process is not like the traditional notion of the photographer ‘shooting’ an image. I often begin with sketches, drawings and writings. I build my images over time, controlling every detail, to achieve what I’m seeking visually.”
Ponsford attempts to; at least begin a change in the way people think about photography as art. “Because photography uses a machine to ‘capture’ an image; people seem to think that it doesn’t have the fluidity that other artforms appear to have. That it’s more viewing than creating. I want to join the artists who are beginning to change the perception of what photography is, by finding out what it can be”
