Takuro Tamura Biography

Born in Osaka in 1989, Takuro Tamura graduated from Kyoto University of the Arts in 2016 and continued developing his practice in Kyoto while working as an assistant at SANDWICH, the multidisciplinary creative platform led by artist Kohei Nawa. He later relocated to Tokyo, where he formally launched his career as an independent artist.

Tamura draws inspiration from subtle moments of dissonance or discovery in everyday experiences. He often engages with motifs related to transportation and urban infrastructure—such as asphalt, road signs, and traffic mirrors—stripping them of their original functions to endow them with new meaning. Harnessing his keen observational skills, technical mastery, and playful sense of humor, the artist recontextualizes familiar objects and materials through a simultaneously poetic and critical lens.

Tamura taps into the ambiguity and uncertainty found in overlooked details of daily life, transforming them into works imbued with understated wit and lyricism. Guided by a sharp, discerning eye on contemporary society, his practice seeks to enrich the ways in which we perceive and remember our surroundings.

The artist’s solo exhibitions include Road and Unroad, Gallery & Bakery Tokyo 8 min (Tokyo, 2025); Uncertain Romance, MAKI Gallery (Tokyo, 2025); 5W__<1H, MAKI Gallery (Tokyo, 2021); and OUT SIDE, y gion (Kyoto, 2018). He also actively participates in group shows and public art projects across Japan.
