Born in Munich, Thomas Weinberger is interested in the aesthetic notion of beauty. His photographs, often depicting urban landscapes, recall the documentary precision and serial presentation of photography's history. Yet Weinberger notes that this relation is less obvious, noting that the Bechers did nothing other than to record sunsets. Rather that placing any emphasis on the documentary or social responsibility of photography, the artist asks after the visual phenomena which shape viewers perceptions of reality. Instead of rationality, his photographs offer a Romantic interpretation of cityscapes and horizons.
Weinberger has trained and worked as an architect, yet has also exhibited extensively across Germany, Australia and the Netherlands. In 2007 he was a guest lecturer at the College of Fine Arts of the University of New South Wales. He currently lives in Berlin.
