Yang Kai was born in 1987 in Yantai, China. Upon completing his studies at the Central Academy of Fine Arts, he enrolled at the University for the Creative Arts (formerly Kent Institute of Art & Design) to further his academic training in fine art. Yang Kai is well known for blending traditional motifs and aesthetics with contemporary subject matter and materials including black steel, acrylic and the internet.
His solo show in de Sarthe’s Project Space was the culmination of a large scale misinformation project that sought to disrupt Yang Kai’s own presence across the internet. He fabricated multiple individuals, all of whom are artists and all of whom are named Yang Kai. He then proliferated this fabricated information across the web in what amounted to the digital distribution of ready-made art across the global information network. The resulting solo show collected this misinformation and exhibited it alongside artwork attributed to the various fabricated Yang Kais.
